David Thompson

I have been seeking opportunities for creative writing as long as I can remember, and there have been a few notable successes along the way, among which include: I wrote a play performed on the London fringe in 2005. A story I wrote about the Nottingham trams was published in Left Lion in 2009. Two stories were published in ‘Stories in Sandstone’, an anthology by the Nottingham Writer’s Group and I had another story in their second anthology, Mackerel Scales and Mares Tails in 2015. I was accepted onto the WriteNow programme run by Penguin Random House in Nottingham in 2018. I was a runner up in a writing competition run by Limnisa, a writing retreat in Greece, in 2019. I was mentored by Jamie Mollart on my latest novel, Blake House, in 2021-2, thanks to the Writing East Midlands mentoring scheme.

David's mentee journey

My time on the programme and of being mentored by Jamie Mollart has been exactly what I hoped it would be – the opportunity to have my writing analysed and improved through one-to-one access to the experience of a published author. Over a twelve month period, Jamie and I have met regularly to discuss the issues which have arisen from specific sections of my latest novel, and used these issues to provoke a wider discussion on improving my writing so that it will be closer to satisfying the demands of an agent and publishers.

It has been a stimulating and supportive experience which I would whole-heartedly recommend any budding novelist to aim for. I am also looking forward to attending the next writers’ conference and the other career development sessions that the mentorship programme also includes.

What happened next?

N/A – Jamie and I held our last meeting very recently!  However, he was keen to encourage me to embark on another draft for my novel which incorporates all the issues that we have discussed and so should be ready to send to agents. He has also assured me (off the record) that he will review the draft when completed, even though this isn’t part of the mentorship programme officially.
