Routes to Writing
Providing Opportunities for all WritersOur Writer Development programme is at the heart of what we do, providing opportunities for emerging, mid-career and established writers to develop their craft.
We offer writing surgeries and one-to-one sessions, as well as workshops and networking sessions which respond to the needs and interests of writers in the region. These cover areas such as personal development planning, craft development, writing in the digital environment, writing in schools, and script writing.
matching mentors to writers
Mentoring Scheme
We believe a well-matched mentoring relationship can give momentum to writers at crucial points in their career. We match three writers a year to an established, professional writer, to help the emerging writer develop their work to a publishable standard. Many of our mentees have gone to on to be published.
We also support a further 15 promising writers a year through this scheme, by identifying ways we can help them during our Creative Professional Development workshops. This might be through courses, shadowing opportunities, potential collaborations or events.
Appraisals from experienced editors
Free Reads Scheme
We work in partnership with The Literary Consultancy to provide writers on low incomes with detailed, written reports of their work from experienced editors and writers. Many are working novelists, Creative Writing lecturers, or have extensive experience of script reading, and all of them have in-depth knowledge of the publishing industry.
never miss an opportunity
Opportunities for Writers
Writing East Midlands aims to bring writers of all levels timely news on courses, submission calls, training and job opportunities, events and book launches. We do this by offering a regular digital newsletter, which features our own news and announcements, and also those from other organisations and individuals from around the East Midlands (and beyond). Sign up to our newsletter below. We also have an opportunities and events listing page on this website. This free to use listings service is viewed by thousands of people all over the region.
