Michelle Alexander is a writer based in Derbyshire. She has had several short stories and poems published in magazines and online and is about to go out for submission with a novel which was long-listed for the Jericho Writers First 500 Novel Competition. She enjoys writing in a wide range of genres so is looking forward to getting the novel sent out so, whilst waiting to hear, she can distract herself by returning to one of her many other works in progress or perhaps starting something new!
Michelle's mentee journey
Applying to the Writing East Midlands mentoring scheme was my cunning plan to find a way to resist my propensity to be constantly distracted by multiple ideas and projects and instead to focus on one of my half-edited novels in order to finally get it ready to submit to agents. Luckily, unlike some cunning plans, it worked amazingly well! I was assigned a brilliant mentor who helped me to do just that, and I am now about to begin querying. I got really helpful feedback and advice from my mentor, who always asked the right questions to help me identify how best to make progress, but the most important benefit was having someone to keep me focused and to provide encouragement at each stage of editing the manuscript and preparing the submission package.
